Here at Royal Nawaab, we are known for producing five star Pakistani and Indian cuisine. To us and many of the people who come to visit our restaurant, Ramadan plays an important part in our lives. It marks the ninth month on the Islamic calendar when the Quaran is believed to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammed and during the holy month, millions of practicing Muslims from around the world will take part. In 2017, Ramadan begins on the evening of Friday 26th May and ends on the evening of Saturday 24th June.

As one of the five pillars of Islam, Ramadan means a month of fasting from sunrise until sunset. Many things are prohibited between dusk and dawn including food, water, swearing, medication and chewing gum and those taking part will spend their time focusing on prayer and reading the Quaran. Completing good deeds and being generous is also highly encouraged. Fasting can be difficult, however it does not take place for a full continuous month as many people believe as one meal is had before sunrise, known as suhoor, and another is had after sunset, known as iftar. During these times, anything can be consumed and there are no restrictions, aside from the foods that are already prohibited like pork and alcohol.

Generally, Ramadan is undertaken by practicing Muslims once they reach puberty, however many individuals are exempt from the requirement to fast such as the elderly, the sick, those on life saving medication and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating. Following the end of Ramadan, a festival known as Eid Al-Fitr takes place and celebrates the breaking of the fast. The festival is known to last for up to three days and many Muslims are known to gift money to charities during the celebrations.
