Forrest Gump often tops many ‘greatest films of all time’ lists and was one of Tom Hanks’ finest performances, turning him into a household name, seemingly overnight. And now, the great movie is receiving a remake from an unlikely source: Bollywood.
Tom Hanks’ role as the slow-witted, kind-hearted Forrest Gump will be reprised by Aamir Khan who is also responsible for producing the remake through his production company Aamir Khan Films, alongside Viacom’s India film unit.
Plans for the remake were announced at a media event on Khan’s 54th birthday, where he said, “I have always loved Forrest Gump as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a life-affirming story. It is a feel good film. It is a film for the whole family.”
The original movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis, who is also known for his work directing other big Hollywood hits such as Back to the Future, Flight and The Polar Express, was released in 1994. The film went on to win 6 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director as well as a Best Actor win for Tom Hanks. Giving any remake some big shoes to fill.
The remake, titled ‘Lal Singh Chadha’ will be directed by ‘Secret Superstar’ visionary Advait Chandan.
Bollywood has not been shy at giving its own spin to a number of Hollywood movies over recent years, having already recreated 2017’s ‘Chef’, by Jon Favreau and work is already underway on a remake of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’.
Remaking a classic like Forrest Gup is no easy feat. The film has already been immortalised by the Library of Congress as they selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
We know that the team at the restaurant can’t wait to see the new adaptation of the 90’s classic. Will you be watching?
