Not every Indian dish is so hot that it induces sweating and teary eyes and it is a common misconception that you have to be a fan of spicy food in order to fully enjoy a hearty Indian meal. Butter Chicken, also known as Murgh Makhani, is a spiced tomato and cream curry that is incredibly popular with both native Indians and Western diners. Read on as we go over everything there is to know about it…
Butter Chicken is a dish that is often compared to Chicken Tikka Masala and Korma due to its lack of intense heat and slightly spiced flavour profile. In fact, it also boasts a similar hue as the curry is typically known to be a vibrant orange. As the name suggests, Butter Chicken has a particularly key ingredient that must be included during the cooking process as this dish simply isn’t the same without it: chicken.
Every Indian chef understands the importance of a marinade as these sauces allow the flavour to permeate the meat much deeper and leave you longing for more. Aromatic pieces of chicken are infused into a creamy curry sauce in order to create an authentic Indian dish that can be enjoyed both in the home and when dining out. Interestingly, the origins of Butter Chicken can be traced back to 1948 Northern India and was created by Kundan Lal Gujral. It is often referred to as Murgh Makhani by natives which quite literally translates to ‘chicken with butter’, although the dish is actually made using a spiced yogurt concoction.
It couldn’t be easier to make Butter Chicken at home and this low-spice dish is popular with families as a result. First, mix your spices with yogurt in order to create a marinade and allow the chicken to marinate overnight. The next day, you’ll want to sear the chicken pieces in a frying pan and then make your butter chicken sauce using spices like turmeric, cumin and red chilli powder. Finally, add the chicken into the sauce and allow to cook completely before serving with rice.
