Eid Al-Fitr

26/06/2017

The holy month of Ramadan has come to an end and over the past 4 weeks, Muslims from all over the world have taken part in fasting from dawn until dusk. As one of the five pillars of Islam, fasting is a very important part of the Islamic religion and is seen as a ways to become closer to Allah. Following the holy month, a celebration takes place known as Eid Al-Fitr. In English, this translates to ‘the breaking of the fast’ and it celebrates the end of Ramadan and the welcoming of the Shawwal, the 10th month in the Islamic calendar. Here are a few interesting facts about the festival…

  • It is customary for those taking part in the festival to eat a breakfast before the Eid prayer because the Prophet Muhammed used to consume something sweet before he offered his prayers.
  • In Muslim countries such as Pakistan, the festival of Eid Al-Fitr is said to be very grand and last for around three days. During this time, Muslims will enjoy a whole range of foods and spend time with loved ones.
  • During Eid Al-Fitr, many Muslims will take part in charity that is known as Zakat-ul-Fitr. Money is given and collected by donation and presented to Muslim families that are poor or in need of financial assistance.
