Indian food is one of the most popular cuisines in the UK, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
Although there are many people that just can’t wait to order an Indian on a Friday night, there are others that are put off by a series of common misconceptions. Their minds are filled with images of fatty meats, buckets of curry powder and enough spice to blow their socks off; of course, these visualisations couldn’t be further from the truth.
Indian cuisine has always been packed with delicious flavours and fragrant spices, which is exactly why it’s so popular in London and the rest of the UK. So, what are the myths deterring some people from Indian food altogether?
It’s Really Unhealthy
Some people are put off trying Indian food because, well, they don’t want to get fat. Of course, this is completely understandable (nobody fancies piling on the pounds in this heat), apart from the fact Indian cuisine isn’t especially fatty or unhealthy.
It’s true that some dishes are made with butter and oil, but even these can be eaten as part of a nutritious, healthy diet. Dishes including lentils and other vegetables are great sources of protein, too, while the spices involved in Indian cooking can provide fantastic health benefits.
There’s absolutely no reason Indian food can’t be eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet- you just need to make sure you’re eating things in moderation!
Everything Is Too Spicy
This is a big one for many people. The last thing they want is to sit down for a meal and end up sweating all over their plates. In fact, the very thought of eating spicy food could be some people’s worst nightmare, leading them to actively avoid Indian food.
Popular dishes such as vindaloo and madras are famous for their strong spices, while the odd side dish can also pack a punch or two. But, on the whole, the majority of Indian dishes aren’t considered spicy at all, while mild curries such as chicken korma and tikka masala are actually the most popular in Britain.
The beauty of Indian food is that there’s something for people of all tastes. Just because some dishes are famous for their spiciness, doesn’t mean that everything else on the menu is the same. Far from it.
It’s Just All About Tikka Masala
For years, chicken tikka masala has been the most popular curry in the UK. The signature orange sauce and mild Indian spices are known all over the country, while even tikka masala crisps were really popular a couple of years ago.
But Indian food isn’t just all about tikka masala. Yes, it’s delicious- but there are many other Indian dishes you need to try as well. A korma is perfect for those that love milder tastes, while a madras or jalfrezi is a great option if you want something with a bit of a kick.
