We’ve all been there.
After inspecting every dish available on our Indian buffet, the smells and flavours of certain dishes will prove too great to ignore. This inevitably leads us to filling our plates without paying much heed to the different spice ratings, telling ourselves we can handle the heat these curries throw at us.
Of course, after one bite, you finally realise your initial bravery was entirely misplaced, and now you’re faced with a plate of food that tastes like molten lava. But, instead of throwing it all away and getting yourself a fresh plate, there are plenty of ways you can actually cool down the spiciness and enjoy the dishes you’ve been craving.
When you eat something a little too spicy, you can probably think of nothing better than downing a gallon of milk in attempt to cool yourself down. Why? Because dairy products are one of the most effective ways of combating excessive spice.
Instead of bringing a pint of milk to our restaurant (which, let’s face it, would be pretty embarrassing), we recommend getting your hands on some yoghurt-based dishes to cool down your burning tongue.
Mango lassi has always been a fantastic way of cooling people down after a spicy curry, which is one of the many reasons it’s so popular at Royal Nawaab. Alternatively, you can add a good dose of mint raita to your curry, which will help to counteract the hotter elements of the sauce and spices.
A slightly less obvious way of combating a spicy dish is adding blander, starchier foods that help to soak up some of the spiciness.
Vegetables and potatoes, for example, are two great options for filling out the curry a bit and helping to diffuse the spice. The curry will still be hot, of course, but these additional ingredients will help to balance the flavour and make the spices much more manageable. Also, this method will make it less obvious that you’re struggling with what you’ve got on your plate!
Although it’s unlikely you’ll be carrying a little packet of sugar around with you, we’d still like to point out that adding some form of sweetener can help to cool down your curry. Of course, there’s no need to go overboard and have your vindaloo tasting more like a dessert, but a small dose of sugar will help to subdue the spicy flavours and make it much easier for you to eat.
