Best Vegetarian Pakistani Cuisine

December 11, 2017

For vegetarians, Asian food is a haven thanks to their sheer amount of vegetarian only cuisine. In Pakistan and India, food culture revolves around the use of vegetables and spices due to meat being an expensive commodity for a large portion of the population.

For those of us in the UK, our history of food revolves more around meat than anything else, so it can be a challenge switching from a meat heavy diet to a vegetarian one. Thankfully we live in 2017 and food from every corner of the globe is readily available – in our supermarkets and in our restaurants.

There are a great many delicious Pakistani dishes that are vegetarian, let’s take a look at some:

Tarka Aloo

Need to refill the tank but are short on time? Tarka Aloo is a super simple recipe of masala, potatoes and chilli that can beat back those hunger pangs. It is also very easy to make.

Bhae ki Sabzi

This popular Sindhi veggie recipe is made from lotus root in an onion based gravy with potatoes and tamarind pulp. For those vegetarians bored of the same old dishes, this is an exciting and refreshing change of pace for your palate.

Bagharay Bainagan

A classic Hyderabad recipe that will leave you desperate for more. Toasted sesame seeds, poppy seeds, peanuts and cumin seeds provide the wonderfully moreish base to this dish.

Sunehri Bhindi

For vegetable lovers, this is a must try dish. The okra in a sauce of yoghurt, tomato, fried onion and spices makes for a really unique flavour that pops with fresh coriander.

Nouratan Zorma

This is a meal worthy of a place at any feast, and comes without a single piece of meat. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike go crazy for this dish. A ginger and tomato puree sets the pace for this dish of cauliflower and cheese.

If this list has made you hungry and are looking for a Halal restaurant, London based Royal Nawaab should be your next destination.
