Pakistan is a country bursting with culture, tradition and delicious food. In fact, Pakistani people are thought to be some of the most generous in the world and locals will often invite tourists to dine with them at their discretion. Both religion and culture often influence the food that is eaten across the world and Pakistan is no different. Read on as we go over some of the meats that are commonly added to dishes for both flavour and nutritional value…
Poultry is the most commonly used meat across the world thanks to its high protein and low-fat qualities. In addition to this, it is also available in abundance which makes it quite affordable to cook with and can be incorporated into a wide range of dishes with ease. Popular Pakistani dishes that use chicken include biryani, yakhni pulao and karahi.
Although it can be quite expensive, there are dozens of Pakistani dishes that feature lamb as the pièce de résistance. This red meat is bursting with flavour, tender, and juicy when slow-cooked over a long-period of time and is a popular ingredient in a lot of traditional curry dishes like gosht masala and karahi.
As an alternative to lamb, it is not uncommon for many south Asian dishes to opt for mutton. This is the meat from a sheep that is older than 2 years and tends to be much darker with bolder flavours that will settle as the meat is slow-cooked. With this said, mutton can be seared and sautéed too, making it a versatile aspect of Pakistani cuisine.
Whilst the predominant religion in Pakistan is Islam, statistics suggest that 2% of the population follows Hinduism. Since the majority of Hindus are vegetarian because cows a viewed as a holy animal, beef isn’t as popular as some of the other meats found in Pakistani cooking. With this said, it can be incorporated into a traditional vindaloo and/or bhuna curry dish.
