It’s a year we’re going to remember for years to come. And the summer has been exceptional; with extraordinary weather, World Cup glory as England finished fourth and a range of other sporting events making it a summer to truly cherish.
Plus, school is now out for summer, and although the weather has turned wetter, greyer and colder, there are still plenty of things to do with the family (both inside and outside) this summer around Manchester.
Here at the Royal Nawaab Manchester, we’ve chosen a few of our favourite activities to do around Manchester… Just be sure to pack both the sun cream and the wellies – just in case!
Outdoor Activities
There’s nothing better on a fine, sunny day to take a trip to your local park. And now, with the new Manchester City of Trees initiative, you’re sure to have a whole lot more fun whilst you’re there.
The Wild in the Woods movement has been initiated by The Oglesby Charitable Trust and Community Forest Trust and aims to get children and families into the great outdoors to see exactly what Manchester and Greater Manchester’s woodlands have to offer.
With places such as Bolton Smithills Estate, Bury’s Waterdale, Heaton Park, and Oldham’s Tandle Hill Country Park all part of the initiative, there are plenty of activity factsheets and ideas available to download from the website here. Who would have thought parks and forests could have been this much fun?
Alternatively, if you’ve been in and around Manchester city centre recently you may have noticed quite a buzz. And we don’t mean the atmosphere! The Bee in the City trail has seen over 200 colourful bee sculptures dotted around the area at key landmarks and places of interest. Each one designed by local artists, schools and creative groups, how many can you find?
With one even signed by Liam Gallagher, it’s sure to be a great activity for the whole family and can break up an otherwise mundane shopping trip which will get the kids (and adults!) raring to find each one!

Enjoy all the fun of the seaside – without actually having to travel to one! From 21st July until 2nd September, the seaside comes to Heaton Park Manchester with a range of fun activities and even… its very own beach!
With children’s rides, water boats, inflatables and giant deck chairs to take advantage of – there’s no better time to feel like you’re on holiday.

It’s no surprise that football and the love of the beautiful game runs through the very veins of Manchester city – with Manchester City winning the Premier League and Manchester United coming second in the 17-18 league.
So, if you’re feeling football fever in your household why not pop down to the National Football Museum this summer? With a number of different exhibitions, games, displays and even interactive activities to get involved with including free football skill sessions to keep young visitors on their toes, it’s sure to be a thrilling day for both adults and children alike.

This year, the Museum of Science and Industry is celebrating the Year of Engineering and so during summer, they’re running various free activities and shows which are trying to encourage youngsters to test their very own creative skills.
You’ll get the chance to hear from real engineers, partake in a spot of soap making and even participate in their tower building challenge, plus with a family weekend between 25th and 26th August, adults can also get in on the creative action and test their own inventive skills!
Between 3rd and 19th August, the museum also welcomes their PowerUP exhibition which is a nostalgic look at retro games and gaming of yesteryear. You and the family will have the chance to play both new and old consoles and take a look back at some of the favourite and most well-loved games of the last few decades.
