Indian Restaurants Fail to Make it into Top 100 in the World

May 28, 2014

A prestigious award ceremony took place in London and declared the top 100 restaurants in the world. Unfortunately not a single Indian Cuisine Restaurant made it onto the list. The winner taking the number one spot has had nine years being on the list and three consecutive wins in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Danish restaurant Noma celebrated once again as it returned to the top spot.

Whilst no Indian restaurant was mentioned on the list, Asia managed to get seven restaurants onto the list. The best restaurant in Asia went to Nahm in Bangkok, Thailand which came in at position number 13 so just outside the top 10.

Gaggan which is also in Bangkok was ranked at number 17 whilst Waku Ghin in Singapore was placed at number 50.

Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca moved up to take second place on the highly prestigious list.

Italy managed to get three restaurants onto the list and taking number 3 position with their restaurant Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana for the second year running.

Surprisingly and for the first time ever, the UK has two restaurants within the top 10 ranking. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal ranked in fifth position and Brett Graham’s The Ledbury was placed at number ten on the list.

America matched countries Spain and France with seven restaurants on the list and two in the top ten. Between the three of them they had the highest number of restaurants overall featured.

Over 900 international leaders in the restaurant industry voted and the list was created. There are 26 separate regions around the world and each of these has 36 members. Of these 36 members there is a chairperson and each member can cast seven votes each but of those seven votes, at least three must recognise restaurants which are outside of that particular members region.

The panel includes food writers, food critics, restaurateurs and highly regarded Gastronomes. Based on the experiences of the person the voters have to list their choices in order of preference. Once the votes are counted the list is compiled and awards received. It is a shame that no Indian Restaurant has made it into the top 100. Hopefully next year India will be more successful.
