It may have slipped your notice, but our Indian restaurant in London played host to a famous Indian film star just last week. The one and only Om Puri visited Royal Nawaab London for our Actor In Law Eid Dinner on Monday 12th September, and we thought we’d give you a quick history of the well-respected actor as we’re such huge fans of his!
Om Puri (OBE) has appeared in mainstream commercial Pakistani, Indian, British and Hollywood films, Independent films and art films. His credits also include appearances in several American films, and he has enjoyed an extremely successful career.
Puri made his film debut in the 1976 Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal, and he went on to star in several other art films such as Sadgati and Mirch Masala. He is a critically acclaimed actor for his stellar performances in unconventional roles, such as a police inspector in Ardh Satya and Jimmy’s manager in Disco Manager. His role in the former earned him a National Film Award For Best Actor.
He has also starred in a number of British films, such as the comedy East Is East, where he played a first-generation Pakistani immigrant in the north of England. He also has a cameo in the critically acclaimed Richard Attenborough film Gandhi. Puri gained international fame for his roles in many British films including My Son the Fanatic and The Parole Officer.
Puri has starred alongside actors such as Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks and Val Kilmer throughout his Hollywood career. More recently, he has starred in films such as Singh Is Kinng and Billu, and has appeared alongside Helen Mirren in The Hundred-Foot Journey.
