Travelling to another continent is the perfect opportunity to sample a whole host of different fruits you may have never had before. It’s true that supermarkets in the UK have more choice in the fruit aisle than ever before, but there are still hundreds of different fruits out there that we’ve never tried, and probably, never even heard of before.
Pakistan is one such place that is famous for tempting sweet fruits, full of rich vitamins and amazing medical qualities. With summer just around the bend, what better time to take a look at some of the most delicious fruits of Pakistan:
An all-time favourite amongst Pakistanis for its sweet taste and heat combating freshness. You will easily find watermelon on the shelves of your local supermarket in the UK year-round, but they won’t taste quite like they do in Pakistan.
When a Pakistani moves abroad, one thing they all tend to miss is a beautiful ripe mango. Nothing can beat the sweet taste of a mango and their unique flavour profiles make them a favourite for street vendors across Asia.
These fruits are native to South Asia and are famously used as a chilled summer drink or eaten with a sprinkle of salt and black pepper. The fruits are a mixture of sweet and sour flavours; they are delicate and difficult to transport which is why it is not readily available around the world.
Most apricots you find in the UK are of the dried variety but when they are eaten fresh they are extremely sweet and tasty, with a velvety orange skin full of beta-carotene and fibre. For many households in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, apricots are the crop of choice to provide a livelihood.
This little fruit is commonly mistranslated for blackberries, but the fruits are actually from an unrelated species of plant. Jamun is often eaten in Pakistan with a sprinkling of salt and pepper and has a number of health benefits including healing systems like Ayurveda, which helps control diabetes.
