Which Food Service Style Should You Use For Your Next Event?

May 14, 2018

Depending on the type of food you are going to be serving at your next event and the style in which it is served, the event will be different.

Often the style of service dictates the types of food the caterer can offer. If food is to be passed around on trays, or served at a table, the types of food they are able to serve will change dramatically.

So, deciding on the style you want your event to be catered to must be organised in advance. But what styles are available?

Reception Service

Light foods are served buffet-style on a table for guests to serve themselves. These are often referred to as ‘walk and talk’ events where people won’t be sitting down to eat, instead they will be eating quickly and socialising at the same time. The food available needs to be light ‘finger-food’; nothing that needs the use of a knife can be served as the guests have no platform available.

Butlered Hors d’Oeuvres Service

This type of service is reserved for upscale receptions; guests serve themselves from trays which are made up by the catering staff and brought around the table by servers.

Action Stations

In a similar vein to a buffet, except the chefs cook the food for the guests at the buffet rather than in the kitchen. As the food is cooked to order, the food served needs to be able to be prepared quickly such as; wok stations, mashed potato bars, fajitas, pastas, grilled meats, omelettes, crepes, sushi, flaming deserts and spinning salad bowls.

Buffet Service

Probably the most popular choice where food is arranged on tables for guests to help themselves. Guests move along the buffet line filling their plates. When they have enough, guests return, with their plates, to the dining tables to enjoy their meals.
